Austrian Gold Philharmonic coins were first introduced in 1989, but it was almost two decades before the Austrian Mint expanded the program to include a silver counterpart. The Silver Philharmonic coins are struck each year by the Mint in a 1 oz. variety, and each coin borrows the designs originally created by Thomas Pessendorfer for the gold coins.
On the obverse side of each coin is the image of the pipe organ found inside the famous Musikverein concert hall in the Innere Stadt neighborhood of Austria’s capital city of Vienna. Engravings on this side read “Republic of Austria,” “1 Ounce Fine Silver,” “2008,” and the coin’s face value. The engravings of the official state name and the weight and metal content are in German.
The reverse side of the coin bears the image of a variety of instruments used by the members of the Vienna Orchestra. Included in the design are a harp, violin, cello, flute, bassoon, and French horn. The engravings of “Vienna Philharmonic” and “Silver” are inscribed in German on this side of the coin.
Each coin available for purchase through this JM Bullion product listing is in Mint State 69 condition. These near-perfect coins have their full, original luster, with a maximum of two minor detracting flaws. Additionally, these coins are from the very first production year of the Austrian Silver Philharmonic coin series.
