The British Silver Britannia Series has been available since 1997. Initially, the Silver Britannia was offered in a much different format than it currently is. As of 2013, the BU Silver Britannia has become a stable offering, but prior to that, the purity was less than .999 pure silver and the designs of Britannia alternated each year. Right now, 2008 1 oz British Silver Britannia Coins are available to purchase online from JM Bullion.
Coin Highlights:
Each of the 2008 1 oz British Silver Britannia Coins available here in this listing comes with a protective plastic flip. These coins come with a unique reverse design from John Bergdahl, with the designer’s JB initials present on the reverse side of the coins. Rather than using .999 pure silver, these coins have .985 pure silver content.
In the early years of issue, British Silver Britannias alternated the reverse images of Britannia. The collection stopped short of using a distinct design each year, but rather, alternated between a handful of images that included Philip Nathan’s long-running image of Britannia in the rotation. It wasn’t until 2013 that the Silver Britannia featured only Nathan’s design each year.
The obverse of 2008 British Silver Britannia Coins comes with a depiction of Queen Elizabeth II. Her Majesty is shown here in right-profile relief in Ian Rank-Broadley’s 1998 depiction of the Queen wearing the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland Tiara.
On the reverse side of 2008 1 oz Silver Britannia Coins is a depiction of Britannia. This unique design was used only in 2008 and was one of the few early design alterations that was used in just one year. The image shows Britannia as a figure emerging from the waves of the sea, almost as though the waves of the ocean form her dress. She clutches a trident in her right hand and a Union Jack shield in her left.
