The American Gold Buffalo Coin was introduced by the United States Mint in 2006. The series was the first-ever 24-karat gold coin from the US Mint when it debuted in 2006, and like other major bullion coins from the mint, it features historic US coin designs from the 20th century as its annual obverse and reverse images. The Gold Buffalo coin features designs inspired by the Buffalo Nickel. Designed by James Earle Fraser in 1913, the Buffalo Nickel imagery debuted on the US nickel in 1913 and remained on the coin until 1938. When the Buffalo Nickel design was eventually replaced, it was replaced by the current design with the image of President Thomas Jefferson.

A stoic Native American figure is shown in right-profile relief on the obverse of the 2008 1/10 oz Burnished American Gold Buffalo. The design was created in 1913 by Fraser and is said to be a combination of the facial features of Big Tree, Iron Tail, and Two Moons, tribal leaders of different indigenous tribes in the early 20th century.
An American bison is depicted on the reverse of 2008 1/10 oz American Gold Buffalo Coins. Fraser created this design as well for the Buffalo Nickel. He used Black Diamond, a bison at the Central Park Zoo, as inspiration for his design.
