In 2006, the United States Mint celebrated an important milestone: the 20th anniversary of the American Eagle coin series. First issued in 1986, the American Silver Eagle and American Gold Eagle were established as the nation’s official bullion coin programs. To recognize two decades of these popular issues, the Mint introduced a special anniversary release of American Silver Eagles. Right now, certified 2006-W Proof American Silver Eagle 20th Anniversary 3-Coin Sets are available from JM Bullion.
Coin Highlights:
Each coin in these certified 2006-W Proof American Silver Eagle 20th Anniversary 3-Coin Sets is encapsulated in a protective slab and graded Mint State or Proof 69 by PCGS. Coins with this grade exhibit full original mint luster and only the smallest of imperfections. Such flaws are limited to faint contact marks or hairlines that do not appear in the primary design areas.
The 2006-W Proof American Silver Eagle 3-Coin Set was issued to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the series and includes three distinct versions. One is the standard Proof Silver Eagle, struck at the West Point Mint with its “W” mint mark. Another is the one-time Reverse Proof Silver Eagle, produced at the Philadelphia Mint with a “P” mint mark. This special strike reverses the traditional proof format, displaying frosted fields with mirrored design elements for a bold visual contrast. Rounding out the set is the Burnished American Silver Eagle, introduced in 2006. The Burnished Silver Eagle features a satin-like finish that is achieved through careful minting and handling processes.
The obverse of each 2006 American Silver Eagle showcases Adolph A. Weinman’s Walking Liberty design. Originally introduced in 1916 for the half dollar, this image is one of the most enduring in American coinage history and remained on the half dollar until 1947.
On the reverse of 2006 1 oz Silver Eagle Coins, John Mercanti’s Heraldic Eagle design continues the tradition of American coin art. Drawing inspiration from motifs first seen on U.S. coins in 1794, Mercanti’s version became the standard reverse for the Silver Eagle series and was used through 2021.
