In 2006, the United States Mint marked a major milestone, the 20th anniversary of its American Eagle coin series. Introduced in 1986, the American Silver Eagle and American Gold Eagle became the nation’s official bullion coin programs. To commemorate two decades of the series, the Mint released a special set of American Silver Eagles. Now, 2006-W Proof American Silver Eagle 20th Anniversary 3-Coin Sets in certified condition are available online at JM Bullion.
Coin Highlights:
The obverse of the 2006 1 oz Silver Eagle Coins in this set features Adolph A. Weinman’s iconic Walking Liberty design on the obverse. First created in 1916 for the half dollar, it is widely regarded as one of the most enduring designs in American coinage and appeared on the 50-cent coin through 1947.
The reverse of each 2006 American Silver Eagle carries John Mercanti’s modern interpretation of the Heraldic Eagle. This image has roots dating back to 1794 in U.S. coin history, and Mercanti’s version remains the definitive representation used on the Silver Eagle series through 2021.
The 2006 release of American Silver Eagles was a tribute to the 20th anniversary of the coin series. The 2006-W Proof American Silver Eagle 3-Coin Set includes three unique versions of the coin. The standard Proof Silver Eagle, struck at the West Point Mint with a “W” mint mark, is one of them. Also featured is a one-time issue Reverse Proof Silver Eagle, produced at the Philadelphia Mint with a “P” mint mark. The reverse proof coin reverses the typical finish seen on Silver Eagle proofs. It features a frosted background field and mirrored, raised design elements, creating a striking visual contrast. A major highlight of the anniversary release was the debut of the Burnished American Silver Eagle. These coins were introduced with special handling and a satin-like finish, the result of a detailed minting process that emphasized careful production and presentation.
These 2006-W Proof American Eagle 20th Anniversary 3-Coin Sets come with plastic slabs for each coin and either Mint State or Proof 69 certifications. Coins in this condition showcase full, original mint luster and have no more than two minor flaws. Those flaws are limited to minuscule contact marks or hairlines located outside the primary focal points.
