The 2006 introduction of the burnished coins, also known as uncirculated Silver Eagles, came on the 20th anniversary of the American Silver Eagles 1986 debut. The US Mint initially offered the Burnished American Silver Eagle with low mintage figures annually, but the Great Recession halted the coining of Burnished Eagles in 2009 and 2010.
On the obverse of each 2006 Burnished American Silver Eagle is Adolph A. Weinmans Walking Liberty depiction. First used on the nations 50-cent piece from 1916 to 1947, Walking Liberty depicts the nations drive toward a brighter future as Liberty walks toward the setting sun in search of continued sunshine.
The reverse of the Burnished Silver Eagle coin includes the heraldic eagle of the United States. Refined for use on these coins by US Mint Engraver John Mercanti, the American bald eagle is set behind the national shield and clutches the arrows of war in one talon while the other holds an olive branch of peace.
Burnished coins are struck on special blanks which are first run through a tumbler to burnish the blanks. This lends rough surfaces and a brighter visual appearance, making these collectible coins all the more beautiful.
The 2006 Burnished American Silver Eagle coins are all struck by the United States Mint at its West Point Mint location. The West Point Mint strikes its W mint mark on the reverse of these coins.
