In 2006, the United States Mint celebrated the 20th anniversary of its American Eagle bullion coin series. Launched in 1986, the series started with American Gold Eagle and American Silver Eagle coins. As part of its 20th-anniversary celebration, the US Mint issued a unique 1 oz Reverse Proof Gold Eagle in 2006. In the obverse design of 2006-W 1 oz Reverse Proof Gold Eagle Coins, the mint features Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ iconic Lady Liberty design. Created in 1907 for the $20 Double Eagle, this visual shows Liberty’s full-length figure in front-facing relief. She is depicted striding forward with a torch in one hand and an olive branch in the other. The field includes sun rays in the background, stars around the edge of the field, and the U.S. Capitol Building.
For the reverse of 2006-W Reverse Proof American Gold Eagles, you will find the image of a family of American bald eagles. This design was created specifically for this coin series in 1986 by Miley Busiek. It shows a male eagle soaring over the nest as a female eagle guards the hatchlings.
American Gold Eagle Coins debuted in 1986 with the 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz gold bullion coins. The series also included a Proof Gold Eagle option, though in 1986 this was only issued as a 1 oz Proof. The mint would later added 1/2 oz coins (1987), as well as 1/4 oz and 1/10 oz coins (1988).
