The first coins available included BU and proof specimens, with four weights available in BU and a single option available in proof that year. In 2006, the US Mint honored the 20th anniversary of the series with a special Reverse Proof Gold Eagle. The 1986 debut of Gold Eagles included 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz gold coins in the BU Gold Eagle Series. The 1986 release featured only 1 oz Proof Gold Eagle. The 1/2 oz Proof Gold Eagle debuted in 1987, followed by the 1/4 oz and 1/10 oz Proof Gold Eagles in 1988. A Burnished Gold Eagle debuted in 2006 as part of the program’s 20th anniversary, with this Reverse Proof Gold Eagle issued only in 2006 to honor the anniversary date.
The obverse of the 2006-W Reverse Proof American Gold Eagle features Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ iconic image of Lady Liberty. The design shows Liberty’s figure in front-facing relief as she strides toward the viewer with a torch in one hand and an olive branch in the other. The background field includes sunrays and a ring of stars.
On the reverse of 2006-W 1 oz Reverse Proof Gold Eagle Coins, Miley Busiek’s original image of a family of bald eagles features on the coins. The image shows a female eagle in its nest with hatchlings as a male eagle soars overhead.
