American Gold Eagle coins are the official gold bullion product of the United States. Each year the United States Mint strikes these coins in bullion, proof, and uncirculated versions, with a total of four different weights available. When the American Gold Eagle program first launched in 1986, it featured four weights in the bullion version and just one in the proof. The ½ oz was the first fractional weight added to the proof version, with the ¼ and 1/10 oz added in 1988. In 2006, the US Mint celebrated 20 years of American Gold Eagle production with the addition of an uncirculated coin to the series.
Each of the 2006-W ½ oz Proof American Gold Eagle coins in this listing has a perfect proof grade of PR70. When the PCGS issues this grade it is in recognition of a coin with its full, original luster, and no detracting flaws whatsoever. The Deep-cameo designation identifies coins with a strong, frosted finish on the design and a deeply-mirrored, clear background field.
On the obverse side of each coin is the depiction of Lady Liberty created by Augustus Saint-Gaudens in 1907. Saint-Gaudens was personally chosen by President Theodore Roosevelt to revive American gold coin design in 1905.
The reverse side features the image of a male bald eagle returning to the nest with an olive branch in its talons. Sculptor Miley Busiek crafted this image in 1986 specifically for use on American Gold Eagle coins.
