Each of the 2006 American Silver Eagle coins available from JM Bullion in this product listing has a near-perfect grade from the NGC. Coins with an MS69 grade have full, original mint luster, but also may feature a maximum of two minor detracting flaws.
Introduced in 1986, the American Silver Eagle program celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2006. The United States Mint celebrated in three ways. First, the 20th Anniversary American Silver Eagle set included a regular proof, the new burnished coin, and a one-time striking of a reverse proof.
Secondly, the US Mint released a combined 20th Anniversary Gold and Silver Eagle Set that featured the new burnished coins in both gold and silver. Third, the US Mint unveiled the all-new burnished version of the coin for individual sale. The special burnished coins feature brilliant finishes that exceeded even the visual beauty of the proof.
The Walking Liberty design featured on the obverse side of the coin was created by Adolph A. Weinman for the Walking Liberty Half Dollar, which was minted from 1916 through 1947. The original design was struck in high relief, and was difficult to mint, so it was replaced in 1948 with a Ben Franklin image. Nonetheless, the Walking Liberty design was cherished and missed, so the design was adapted for the American Eagle Silver Dollar in 1986 and has remained in mint until this day.
On the obverse of all American Silver Eagle coins is the image of Walking Liberty. Adolph A. Weinman completed this design in 1916, and depicted Lady Liberty walking toward the setting sun as a reminder of the nation’s constant drive to reach a brighter future.
The reverse featured the image of a heraldic eagle. In the design from John Mercanti, US Mint Chief Engraver, the American bald eagle is set behind a heraldic shield. In its right talon it clutches arrows, while it holds an olive branch in its left. The 13 stars arranged in a pyramid above its head represent the original colonies.
