On the obverse of the 2006 American Silver Eagle coin is the design of Walking Liberty. This depiction of Liberty was created in 1916 by Adolph A. Weinman and featured on the Walking Liberty Half Dollar circulation coin from 1916 until 1947.

The reverse of 2006 1 oz American Silver Eagle coins includes the design of the heraldic eagle of the United States. First used in 1794 on coinage from the original Philadelphia Mint, this design has been modified multiple times. This latest modernization came in 1986 from John Mercanti, a US Mint engraver who later served as the 12^th Chief Engraver of the United States Mint in 2006.
