In 2006, the United States Mint marked a significant milestone: the 20th anniversary of the American Eagle coin program. First introduced in 1986, the American Silver Eagle and American Gold Eagle were created as the nation’s official bullion coin series. To celebrate two decades of production, the Mint released a special anniversary edition of the Silver Eagle. Today, certified 2006 1 oz American Silver Eagle 20th Anniversary 3-Coin Sets are available at JM Bullion.
Coin Highlights:
Adolph A. Weinman’s iconic Walking Liberty design, which graced the half dollar from 1916 to 1947, drew inspiration from classical Roman and Greek imagery combined with American ideals of freedom. Weinman envisioned Liberty as a confident, striding figure draped in flowing robes, carrying laurel and oak branches symbolizing civic and military glory.
Each coin in the certified 2006-W Proof American Silver Eagle 20th Anniversary 3-Coin Set is sealed in a protective slab and graded Mint State or Proof 69 by PCGS. Coins at this grade level maintain their full mint luster with only the faintest contact marks or hairlines, none of which appear in the main design features. This set includes a Proof Silver Eagle, Reverse Proof Silver Eagle, and a Burnished Silver Eagle.
The obverse of each 2006 American Silver Eagle features Adolph A. Weinman’s timeless Walking Liberty design. Debuting in 1916 on the half dollar, this image became one of the most enduring works of U.S. coinage art and appeared on the half dollar until 1947.
The reverse of each 2006 1 oz Silver Eagle Coin highlights John Mercanti’s Heraldic Eagle. Drawing from U.S. coin designs dating back to 1794, this modern interpretation became the long-standing reverse of the Silver Eagle, used until 2021.
