The striking of just 237,510 of the 2006 1 oz American Gold Eagle coins marked the sixth lowest mintage in the program’s history, and the lowest mintage in the 1 oz American Gold Eagle bullion coin since 2001.
On the obverse of the 2006 1 oz. American Gold Eagle Coin you’ll find an image of Liberty in full-length robe with flowing hair as she walks forward toward the viewer from the city of Washington DC, with the national capitol building visible in the background. Surrounded by 50 stars and the word “Liberty,” this design was originally created in 1907 by Augustus Saint-Gaudens.
The reverse of all American Gold Eagle coins includes the image of a male bald eagle flying over a nest that contains a group of hatchlings under the watchful eye of a female bald eagle. This design is exclusive to the American Gold Eagle coin and was created in 1986 by Miley Busiek.
All American Gold Eagle coins are produced by the United States Mint, with all current versions struck by the West Point Mint facility.
