The obverse field of 2005-W Proof American Gold Eagle Coins features a depiction of Liberty. This Augustus Saint-Gaudens image was originally designed in 1907. It features Liberty walking toward the viewer holding an olive branch in one hand and a torch in the other. The U.S. Capitol Building is seen at Liberty’s feet.

All 2005-W 1 oz Proof American Gold Eagles showcase a family of bald eagles on the reverse. The image shows a female eagle protecting her family in a nest while the male eagle is flying over them. Identifying marks of the coin surround this image.

The US Mint released Proof American Gold Eagle Coins in 1 oz weights back in 1986. A year later they would debut 1/2 oz versions with 1988 seeing the release of 1/10 oz and 1/4 oz proofs. While total mintage for the proof series has declined over the years, it remains a popular collectible for numismatists.
