This design comes from Augustus Saint-Gaudens and was originally created in 1907 for the $20 Gold Double Eagle The design shows Liberty in a full-length figure in front-facing relief with a torch held aloft in her right hand and an olive branch in her left hand. The design includes sun rays from the horizon, the U.S. Capitol Building, and a ring of stars.
For the reverse of the 2002-W 1/4 oz Proof American Gold Eagle Coin, private artist and sculptor Miley Busiek is credited for the imagery. It features a male bald eagle flying over the family nest, which contains a group of hatchlings and the female eagle standing guard.
