This design was created in 2007 after President Roosevelt commissioned a new design for American gold coinage. It showcases Liberty striding confidently forward holding a torch in one hand and an olive branch in the other. 50 stars encircle this powerful image.
The reverse of 2005-W ½ oz Proof Gold Eagle Coins features a family of bald eagles created by Miley Busiek. This image shows a family of bald eagles in a nest as the male bald eagle flies toward them. The male bald eagle is seen holding an olive branch in his talons.
Proof versions of American Gold Eagles debuted alongside the BU coins in 1986, however, only 1 oz Proofs were made available. 1/2 oz were produced starting in 1987 with 1/4 oz and 1/10 oz joining the following year. Proofs have been struck every year except for 2009 due to the housing crisis.
