The US Mint introduced the Silver Proof Set in 1992, containing certain coins struck in 90% silver. The Set was popular this first year, with a mintage of 1,009,586 sets. Sales then dropped off and it took until 2003 for the mintage numbers to surpass 1 million again. In 2005, the mintage was 1,069,679 sets, which was the 3rd year in a row with over 1 million sets. The coins struck in 90% silver are the dime, the 5 State Quarters, and the half dollar. The mirror-like proof finish of these coins enhances their beauty. The US Mint in San Francisco made this set. JM Bullion has the 2005 US Mint Silver Proof Sets available for purchase right now.

The 11 coins in the Mint Silver Proof Set come in 2 separate plastic holders. One holder contains the Lincoln Cent, the Roosevelt Dime, the Kennedy Half Dollar, and the Sacagawea Dollar. Also included in this holder are the 2nd year of the Westward Journey Jefferson nickels. These nickels display a new obverse design as well as 2 new reverse designs for the American Buffalo and Ocean in View. The other holder contains the 2005 coins of the Statehood series representing California, Minnesota, Oregon, Kansas, and West Virginia.
The sales of the Silver Proof Sets started in early June. However, the US Mint decided to offer a separate 90% silver proof set of only the 5 State Quarters, and began selling these in early February. The original issue price of the State Quarters only proof set was $23.95, while the original issue price of the complete Silver Proof Set was $37.95.
The packaging of the 2005 Silver Proof Sets continues as it has been since 1999, when the State Quarters Program was added to the Proof Set. The State Quarters are in one holder while the annual coins are in another. The color scheme of the Silver Proof Set is a red background to distinguish them from the regular Proof Sets with their blue background.
