The Statehood quarters series began in 1999 with designs that showcase the originality of each state. The Statehood quarters series ran through 2008 with five new quarters being released each year. The mint released the coins in the same order in which the states were ratified or added to the Union. The states included in the 2005 set include California, Minnesota, Oregon, Kansas, and West Virginia.
On the obverse of each quarter, you will find the same image of President George Washington that you are used to seeing on circulation quarters. On the reverse faces of the quarters, you will find unique imagery for each release. The designs are all themed by the state they represent. There are a few common elements, however, such as the name of the state, the year it became a state, year of the release, and the phrase “E Pluribus Unum.”
The design on the reverse of the California quarter showcases conservationist John Muir at Yosemite Valley. On the reverse of the Minnesota quarter, you will see the image of a loon on a tree-lined lake and an outline of the state with the phrase “Land of 10,000 Lakes.” The Oregon quarter bears the image of Crater Lake with Wizard Island in the background. The Kansas quarter features the image of a bison with sunflowers, the state animal and flower. On the rear face of the West Virginia quarter is the image of the New River Gorge bridge sitting over New River Gorge.
