George T. Morgan was born on November 24, 1845, in Bilston, Staffordshire, England. In 1876, Morgan moved to the United States and began working as an assistant engraver at the U.S. Mint in Philadelphia under Chief Engraver William Barber. While his lasting legacy is wrapped up in the Morgan Silver Dollar design that bears his name, he created many enduring designs for the US Mint. Some of his greatest works never saw the light of day on US Mint coins, but in 2005 a new light shone on some of those designs. Now, 2005 5 oz Proof Gold $100 Union George T. Morgan Rounds are available for purchase online from JM Bullion.
Round Highlights:
Morgan's most famous contribution came in 1878 when he won a competition to design a new silver dollar. His design featured a profile of Lady Liberty on the obverse and an eagle on the reverse. In 2002, a batch of proposed design sketches from Morgan was discovered. Amidst the batch was the design of a capped bust Liberty in a seated position.
In the 19th century, the US Mint had struck proof coins for a new $50 denomination known as Half Unions. Morgan’s sketch of the capped bust, seated Liberty was proposed for the $100 Union, but was never struck in proof or for circulation. The designs were later struck on these gold rounds for the world to see, bringing Morgan’s long-lost sketches to life.
For the obverse of the 2005 5 oz Proof Gold George T. Morgan Round, you will find image of a capped Liberty seated on a rock in right-profile relief. She extends an olive branch in her left hand while her right clutches a scepter. Wheat stalks are bunched behind her figure while a sailing vessel passes by mountains in the background.
In the reverse design of 2005 Proof Gold $100 Union George T. Morgan Rounds, the mint struck Morgan’s other sketch for the $100 Union. Here, the American bald eagle is shown with wings outstretched as its talons clutch the US national shield. Additionally, you can see three arrows and an olive branch.
These 2005 5 oz Proof Gold $100 Union George T. Morgan Rounds are available in NGC slabs. Each one has GEM Proof visuals, indicating that the rounds have high-quality mirrored fields to contrast the design strike.
