Lunar Series I coins debuted at Perth Mint in 1996, the Year of the Rat. The Year of the Rat, or Year of the Mouse, is the first in the 12-year cycle of the Zodiac. Throughout the Lunar Series I, II, and III collections, Perth Mint has maintained its design releases with the alignment of the Lunar Calendar.
In 2005, the Australian Lunar Rooster Coins from the Lunar Series I release at Perth Mint aligned with the 10th year in the lunar cycle. The Lunar Rooster release was the 10th overall, but just the seventh for silver coins in the collection as no silver bullion specimens were issued in 1996, 1997, or 1998.
The obverse of the 2005 1 oz Silver Lunar Rooster Coin features a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. Her Majesty is shown here in right-profile relief wearing the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland Tiara. This design was created in 1998 by Ian Rank-Broadley.
On the reverse side of 2005 Australian Silver Lunar Rooster Coins, you will find a confident rooster. The creature is shown in left-profile relief as it looks back over its shoulder beyond its tail feathers. The design includes stylized clouds and a sun on the horizon in the background.
These 2005 1 oz Australian Silver Lunar Rooster Coins are available with individual protective capsules for shipping and come with a mintage of 92,691 coins. This marked a significant decline compared to the previous two issues and was less than one-third of the maximum mintage level Perth would allow.
