The Silver Kookaburra from the Perth Mint is one of the world’s best-selling silver coins and one of Australia’s most popular. Introduced in 1990, the series was the first wildlife-themed annual silver release from Perth Mint and the first to establish a pattern of using new reverse designs with each issue. Though the 2005 had a low final mintage of 95,145 coins, it was an improvement over the 2004 mintage of just 84,455 coins.
On the obverse of 2005 Australian Silver Kookaburras is a bust of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. England’s longest-reigning monarch is shown here in right-profile relief and wears the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland Tiara on her head. This effigy was created in 1998 by Ian Rank-Broadley as the fourth-generation bust of the Queen during her reign.
The reverse side of 2005 1 oz Silver Kookaburra Coins features a unique depiction of a solitary kookaburra on a small perch. In Aboriginal Dreamtime stories, the kookaburra is sometimes depicted as a creator or trickster figure. These stories often highlight the bird’s intelligence and cunning, attributing it with supernatural powers.
