The Rooster is the tenth animal in the 12-year cycle of the Chinese zodiac. People born in these years are believed to possess traits associated with the rooster, such as being hardworking, punctual, and confident. The Perth Mint’s Lunar Series collections started in 1996 and have reached a third distinctive series as of 2020. In 1996, the Perth Mint introduced its first Lunar Series program. Known as Lunar Series I, following the debuts of Lunar Series II (2008) and Lunar Series III (2020), the program started with only gold coins. From 1996 to 1998, only gold bullion coins were available. The silver coins in the series started in 1999.
The Rooster year is represented by the Chinese character “You” (酉), which depicts a bird’s footprint. The lucky colors associated with the Rooster year are gold, brown, and yellow, while the unlucky colors are white and green.
For the obverse design of 2005 1/2 oz Silver Lunar Roosters, the Perth Mint features a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. Her Majesty is shown in right-profile relief wearing the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland Tiara. This design was created in 1998 by Ian Rank-Broadley and was used widely on Australian coins through 2018-2019.
On the reverse of 2005 Australian Silver Lunar Rooster Coins, you will find a depiction of the rooster. Here, the rooster is shown standing in left-profile relief as it looks back over its figure. The rooster stands near a stylized flower with images of the sun and clouds on the horizon behind its figure.
These 2005 1/2 oz Australian Silver Lunar Rooster Coins are available to you with plastic capsules. The coins had a low mintage for the 2005 release, with the 1/2 oz silver coin the smallest BU silver coin available in this collection from Perth Mint.
