Proof American Gold Eagles have been a mainstay of the United States Mint’s offerings since the series debuted in 1986. The early 2000s marked a sustained low point in the production of Proof Gold Eagles. Across the four weights, mintage figures were down from the last three years of the 1990s and 2000. For the 1 oz Proof Gold Eagle, mintage figures were below 30,000 on an annual basis from 2000 to 2004.
All 2004-W 1 oz Proof American Gold Eagle Coins are presented in a protective capsule, housed in an official U.S. Mint display box. The inner box comes with a themed shipper and a Certificate of Authenticity. Struck with frosted designs over mirror-like fields, these 22-karat gold coins consist of 91.67% gold, 5.33% copper, and 3% silver.
The obverse of the 2004-W Proof American Gold Eagle features the timeless Liberty design created by Augustus Saint-Gaudens. Originally used on the $20 Double Eagle, this image depicts Liberty striding forward with a torch in her right hand and an olive branch in her left, with the sun’s rays and the Capitol building in the background.
On the reverse of 2004-W 1 oz Proof Gold Eagle Coins is Miley Busiek’s family of bald eagles design. A male eagle soars above the nest while the female watches over their young, symbolizing unity and strength in American families.
