The Gold Eagles debuted in 1986 with the 1 oz coin. The 1/4 oz fractional weight coin wasn’t introduced until 1988; and, at that time, this coin was produced by the Philadelphia branch of the United States Mint rather than in West Point. It would remain this way until after 1993, when the production of fractional weights in the series was officially and permanently transferred to the West Point Mint.
The obverse of the 2004 1/4 oz Proof American Gold Eagle Coin shows the image of Lady Liberty, which was designed by Augustus Saint-Gaudens and taken from his original Double-Eagle design. In this image—which has remained the featured obverse design in the American Gold Eagle Coin collection since its debut—shows Lady Liberty striding forward. Sun rays extend out behind her to highlight her beauty and radiance. In her hands, she carries a torch and an olive branch.
Like the obverse, the reverse of the 2004 1/4 oz Proof American Gold Eagle Coin features a design that this series has been known for since its beginning. This design, created by Miley Busiek, shows an eagle family nesting together. The male eagle flies overhead carrying an olive branch in its talons, while the female eagle and her eaglets wait for his arrival in the nest.
