These coins all ship directly from our secure vault to your door in plastic slabs from the Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS). Each of the coins was given a perfect Proof 70 grade, meaning they are fully struck and free of visual marks. However, this grade does allow for “as minted” defects as long as they are minor.
The PCGS has also given these coins the DCAM designation. DCAM, which stands for Deep Cameo, means that the design fields on both faces of the coins are heavily frosted, while the backgrounds are deeply-mirrored. DCAM coins display a significant contrast between the backgrounds and design fields.
On the obverse, you will find the image of Lady Liberty mid-stride as she walks away from the Capitol Building. The image was created by Augustus Saint-Gaudens in 1907. In the image, Lady Liberty carries an olive branch in one hand and a flaming torch in the other. As she walks, the sun shines around her back. Engravings on this face of the coin include “LIBERTY” and “2004.”
The reverse design features the image of the American bald eagle. This image was created just for these coins in 1986 by Miley Busiek. In this image, you will notice that the male bald eagle is returning to a nest where his mate and hatchling wait. In his talons, he holds an olive branch, symbolizing peace. On this side of the coin, there are numerous engravings, including “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and “IN GOD WE TRUST.”
These proof coins are struck using polished dies at extremely-high pressure levels. As a result, the coins have sharper rims and designs. This striking method leaves the background incredibly smooth, which helps add contrast between the designs and background fields.
