American Gold Eagle coins were authorized by Congress with passage of the Gold Bullion Coin Act of 1985. The bill established guidelines for the production of a bullion coin in four weights (1 oz, oz, oz, and 1/10 oz) and a proof version in a 1 oz weight.
The first coins were struck and released in 1986. When the proof coins were struck in 1987, the oz weight was added to the lineup, and joined one year later by the oz and 1/10 oz weights in proof.
Each of the 2004-W oz Proof American Gold Eagle coins in this listing has a grade of PR70 from the PCGS. Coins in this condition have their full, original luster, and no blemishes, hairlines, contact marks, or other detracting flaws. The Deep-cameo designation is reserved for coins with design sets that appear to float above a clear background field.
On the obverse side of each is Augustus Saint-Gaudens iconic Lady Liberty, featured striding forward with a torch as a guiding light in one hand and the olive branch of peace in the other. Sculptor Miley Busiek created the image of a male bald eagle returning to a female and hatchlings in the nest exclusively for the American Gold Eagle in 1986.
