Kookaburras exhibit strong territorial behavior and typically have limited natural dispersal, with young birds often remaining in their parents’ territory as helpers before establishing their own nearby ranges. The laughing kookaburra’s natural range was historically restricted to eastern and southeastern Australia, but human intervention dramatically altered their distribution when they were successfully introduced to Tasmania in the 1900s and to southwestern Western Australia in the 1890s and 1900s.
The obverse design of the 2004 Australian Silver Kookaburras, the Perth Mint features Ian Rank-Broadley’s well-known right-profile effigy of Queen Elizabeth II. Her Majesty is depicted wearing the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland Tiara, with inscriptions of her name, the nation of issue, and the face value. This portrait of the Queen appeared on Australian coinage from 1998 until 2017.
