American Gold Eagle coins debuted in 1986 in bullion and proof versions, with the 1 oz American Gold Eagle coin serving as the primary offering in the collection. The bullion coin was made available in 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz weights. Meanwhile, the proof was available only in 1 oz for 1986.
Over time, the American Gold Eagle collection has expanded to include a proof 1/2 oz. American Gold Eagle in 1987, a 1/4 oz and 1/10 oz proof American Gold Eagle in 1988, and all four weights were made available in burnished version in 2006.
All 2004 1 oz American Gold Eagle coins in this listing from JM Bullion are in BU condition. Coins in BU condition show no signs of wear and tear, however, you may notice minor flaws such as breaks in the luster, spotted surfaces, and contact marks from the striking of blanks during the production process.
On the obverse of the 2004 1 oz American Gold Eagle coin you’ll find the image of Liberty created by Saint-Gaudens. Designed in 1907 and originally featured on the $20 Gold Double Eagle, this image depicts the full-length figure of Liberty as she walks forward from the national capital holding a torch in her right hand and the olive branch in her left hand.
The reverse of the American Gold Eagle coin bears an American bald eagle design created exclusively for the American Gold Eagle by Miley Busiek. It depicts a nest full of bald eagle hatchlings under the watchful eye of a female eagle. Meanwhile, a male eagle flies overhead clutching an olive branch in his talon.
