Augustus Saint-Gaudens was an American sculptor who lived from 1848 to 1907. He was born in Dublin, Ireland, but his family moved to the United States when he was just six months old. In addition to designing the 1907 $20 Double Eagle, Saint-Gaudens was responsible for redesigning the $10 Eagle that same year.
The obverse of the 2004 American Gold Eagle Coin comes with a depiction of Lady Liberty in front-facing relief. This design includes a depiction of Liberty’s full-length figure as she holds aloft a torch in her right hand and clutches an olive branch in her left hand.
On the reverse side of 2004 1 oz Gold Eagle Coins, you will find an image of American bald eagles. Miley Busiek developed this design for the series in 1986 and it is exclusive to the American Gold Eagle collection.
