The Canadian Gold Maple Leaf is one of the world’s best-selling gold bullion coins. First introduced in 1979, it was initially available only as a 1 oz gold coin. When the Royal Canadian Mint introduced the Gold Maple Leaf in 1979, the coins were available only as 1 oz gold coins with .999 purity levels. In 1982, the mint expanded the program to include the first-ever fractional-ounce coins with 24-karat gold, or .9999 gold content. The 1/2 oz Gold Maple Leaf was introduced in 1986 and has been available since that time.
All Gold Maple Leafs feature a sugar maple leaf on the reverse. The sugar maple leaf has been a symbol of Canada since the 18th century and was officially adopted as the centerpiece of the National Flag of Canada in 1965.
Queen Elizabeth II is on the obverse of 2004 1/2 oz Gold Maple Leaf Coins. This design from Susanna Blunt debuted in 2004 as the fourth, and final, effigy of Elizabeth II. Her Majesty is shown in right-profile relief in this portrait. This is only the second portrait of a monarch from the Royal Canadian Mint that was created by a Canadian artist.
For the reverse of the 2004 Canadian Gold Maple Leafs, the Royal Canadian Mint features the same design each year. Walter Ott created this image of the sugar maple leaf in 1979 for the series and it captures a natural view of the nation’s official emblem.
