The 2004 Lunar Monkey Series was the sixth in the Lunar Series I collection of silver coins. The gold coins in the Lunar Series I program started in 1996, leaving a three-year gap before the first silver coins were issued.
For the obverse of the 2004 Australian Silver Lunar Monkey, Perth Mint features Ian Rank-Broadley’s effigy of Queen Elizabeth II. This popular design was created in 1998 and featured on coins throughout the Commonwealth until at least 2015. In some cases, the design was used even longer, featuring on Lunar Series coins from Perth until 2019.
In the reverse design of 2004 1/2 oz Silver Lunar Monkey Coins, you will find Sarah Anderson’s design for the Year of the Monkey. Here, a small monkey is shown seated on the branch of a tree with foliage surrounding the outer edges of the coin’s design field.
