The American Silver Eagle program was introduced by the United States Mint in 1986 as the nation’s official silver bullion coin series. Originally available in bullion and proof, the coins are also struck today in a burnished version. While the bullion is aimed at investors, the latter two versions are ideal for numismatists. Right now, the 2003 Proof American Silver Eagle is available from JM Bullion in perfect condition.

Ultra-cameo is a designation used to identify proof coins with contrasting finishes on the design sets and background fields. This contrast is created through the use of strong, frosted matte finishes on the design aspects, and deeply-mirrored, clear finishes to the background field. All proof coins get these features through special chemical treatments of the die before striking, and higher pressure levels and multiple strikings during the coining process.
On the obverse of each coin is Adolph A. Weinman’s Walking Liberty design. First used on the Walking Liberty Half Dollar from 1916 to 1947, this image depicts Lady Liberty walking toward the setting sun with the American flag draped over her shoulders.
The reverse features the heraldic eagle of the United States. The image depicts an American bald eagle behind the national shield, with arrows in one talon and an olive branch in the other. Created in 1986, this image came from John Mercanti, Chief Engraver at the United States Mint from 1986 to 2010.
All American Silver Eagles are now produced at the West Point Mint. However, proof specimens were originally produced by the San Francisco Mint (1986 to 1992) and Philadelphia Mint (1993-2000) before shifting to West Point.
