When the Proof American Silver Eagle was introduced by the United States Mint, the San Francisco Mint was in charge of production and issued the coins with S mint marks on the reverse. This continued from 1986 to 1992.
In 1993, the Philadelphia Mint took over production of the Proof Silver Eagle and would issue the specimens through 2000 with a P mint mark on the reverse. Starting in 2001, the West Point Mint took over issuing the coins with W mint marks. This 2003 Proof Silver Eagle is just the third from West Point.
Obverse design elements on these 2003-W 1 oz Proof Silver Eagle Coins include Walking Liberty. This famous depiction of Liberty in left-profile relief was created in 1916 by Adolph A. Weinman for the US half dollar.
