Right now, the 2003-W 1/4 oz Proof American Gold Eagle Coin can be purchased online from JM Bullion.
Coin Highlights:
The 2003-W 1/4 oz Proof American Gold Eagle Coin was struck by the West Point Mint in 22 karats of actual gold content. The “W” mint mark featured on the coin itself proves that it was struck at the United States Mint West Point branch. This coin is actually made with a combination of 91.67% gold, 5.33% copper, and 3% silver. It also includes a unique proof finish, giving its appearance a mirror-like quality. This proof finish also means that the designs featured on the coin are frosted, which helps to give the viewer great visual contrast.
The American Gold Eagle Coin series was first introduced in 1986 with the 1 oz gold coin. Fractional weights in the series weren’t released until 1987 and were produced by the Philadelphia Mint. However, in the years following 1993, the production of all fractional weights was also transferred to the West Point Mint for the sake of keeping the production of all American Gold Eagle coins at one location.
The obverse of the 2003-W 1/4 oz Proof American Gold Eagle Coin shows the image of Lady Liberty taken from Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ original Double-Eagle design. This has been the featured obverse design in the American Gold Eagle coin collection since it was first released. In the image, Lady Liberty walks forward with both arms extended. In one hand she holds a torch up high, while the other holds onto an olive branch. Sun rays extend out behind her to help highlight her radiance and importance.
The reverse of the 2003-W 1/4 oz Proof American Gold Eagle Coin shows an image of an eagle family, which was designed by artist Miley Busiek. A male eagle is shown flying overhead and carrying an olive branch in its talons, while the female eagle and eaglet sit waiting in the nest for the male to arrive.
