The late 1990s and early 2000s was an interesting period for the Proof American Silver Eagle. Like its BU counterpart, the Proof Silver Eagle saw depressed demand throughout much of the 1990s.
This depressed demand was largely a result of investors and collectors satisfying pent-up demand in the late 1980s following the debut of the coins. The Y2K crisis helped drive demand back up in the final years of the 1990s and this was followed by the Dotcom bubble burst and the economic uncertainty that followed.
An exquisite portrayal of Walking Liberty graces the obverse of the 200-W 1 oz Proof Silver Eagles. Originally designed by Adolph A. Weinman in 1916, this depiction captures Liberty in full-length relief, elegantly walking towards the sun on the horizon. Engraved on the reverse of the 2002-W Proof American Silver Eagles is the contemporary portrayal of the heraldic eagle. Conceived by John Mercanti in 1986, this representation exhibits a commanding bald eagle in front-facing.
