In 2001, the Proof American Gold Eagle coins dropped to some of the lowest levels seen since 1998. After a tough year, the 2002 1 oz Proof American Gold Eagle moved upward to a total of nearly 27,500 coins. The increase from 2001 totaled 2,944 coins in total.

The reverse side of 2002 1 oz Proof American Gold Eagles bears the image of an American bald eagle. This design was created by Miley Busiek and captures an entire family of eagles.
