American Gold Eagle coins are struck by the United States Mint on an annual basis, with the modern program consisting of coins available in four different weights and three different versions. Each of the 2002 American Gold Eagle proof coins in this product listing is a perfect specimen according to the PCGS. Coins with a PR70 grade exhibit full, original mint luster and have no blemishes, contact marks, hairlines, or other detracting flaws.
The deep-cameo designation is one reserved for proof coins with an exceptional finish. The design set of the coin bears a strong, frosted matte finish, while the background field is deeply-mirrored and clear.
Augustus Saint-Gaudens was hand-picked by President Theodore Roosevelt in 1905 to help lead the charge to redesign all American gold coins. This effort would eventually grow to include all American currency over the next 16 years, but Saint-Gaudens’ Lady Liberty image was not only the first, but the best of those designs.
On the obverse of the American Gold Eagle coin is Saint-Gaudens’ Lady Liberty, as created in 1907 by the Irish-American artist and sculptor. His original design appeared on the $20 Gold Double Eagle coin from 1907 to 1933.
The reverse of each of these proof coins has the image of a family of bald eagles, with the male flying over the family nest while a female stands guard over a group of hatchlings. Modern artist Miley Busiek was commissioned to create this design in 1985, completing it in 1986 for the American Gold Eagle.
