Starting in 1999, the United States Mint released special edition quarters for the States Quarters Program. These quarters feature special reverse designs that differ from the quarter’s classic heraldic eagle design. Instead, each quarter is adorned with special imagery to represent a specific American state. These coins are available again, except struck with actual silver. Right now, the 2002 U.S. Mint Proof Silver Quarters Set is available for purchase from JM Bullion.

The 2002 U.S. Mint Proof Silver Quarters Set features five quarters from the States Quarters Program. This time, these quarters have been struck in actual silver content, containing 90% silver and 10% copper. They also feature a unique proof finish, meaning the design featured on the coin is frosted while the background is mirrored. The proof finish on each quarter gives the viewer wonderful contrast visually.
The States Quarters Program ran from 1999 to 2008. During this time, the United States Mint location based in San Francisco released five different quarter designs each year. Each design has been designated to a specific American state, and all coins have been released in order of state ratification according to U.S. history.
The obverse on each quarter in the 2002 U.S. Mint Proof Silver Quarters Set showcases the side-facing portrait of George Washington. Known for his leadership and role as one of America’s Founding Fathers, George Washington remains an important figure in history. In fact, the image of his portrait—which was originally created in 1932 by John Flanagan—still appears as the featured obverse design on the United States quarter today.
The 2002 U.S. Mint Proof Silver Quarters Set features five different reverse designs. Each quarter in this set has been designated with its own design to celebrate and honor special characteristics of certain states of the U.S. The five states that were released in 2002 and are featured in this set include: Indiana, Tennessee, Ohio, Louisiana, and Mississippi.
