The 2001-W 1/2 oz Proof American Gold Eagle Coin was struck in 22 karats of actual gold content by the West Point Mint, which is indicated by the “W” mint marking featured on one side of the coin. The coin was also made with a metal combination containing the following: 91.67% gold, 5.33% copper, and 3% silver. The proof finish featured on this coin indicates that it’s mirrored in appearance, while the designs are frosted so as to stand out from the backgrounds. This is a great way to offer visual contrast to the viewer.
The American Gold Eagle Coin collection was initially introduced in 1986 with the 1 oz coin. Fractional coins in the series, such as this 1/2 oz coin, weren’t introduced until 1987. They were also originally produced by the Philadelphia branch of the United States Mint, and it wasn’t until after 1993 that the production of fractional American Gold Eagle coins was transferred to the West Point Mint. Since then, all weight denominations in this collection have been manufactured at West Point.
The obverse of the 2001-W 1/2 oz Proof American Gold Eagle Coin shows the image of Lady Liberty, which was created by artist Augustus Saint-Gaudens. This image has been used as the featured obverse design since the series initially began. In the design, Lady Liberty walks forward toward the viewer with both arms outstretched. In one hand she holds a torch high, while the other holds an olive branch. Behind her, sun rays extend out into the sky to highlight her radiance.
The reverse of the 2001-W 1/2 oz Proof American Gold Eagle Coin shows the image of an eagle family. This design was created by Miley Busiek and has also been featured on the American Gold Eagle Coin since the series began. A female eagle is shown nesting with her eaglets, while the male eagle flies overhead carrying an olive branch in its talons.
