The American Gold Eagle Coin collection is a timeless series that was first introduced to the bullion world in 1987. In 1988, the 1/10 oz fractional-weight coin was introduced by the Philadelphia Mint. Eventually, the production of all weight denominations in this series—that is, the 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz—moved permanently to the West Point Mint location in 1994.
The obverse of the 2001-W 1/10 oz Proof American Gold Eagle Coin shows the image of Lady Liberty. This design is inspired by Augustus Saint-Gaudens, who created the Double Eagle design that was featured on United States twenty-dollar gold pieces from 1907 to 1933. In the design, Lady Liberty walks toward the viewer. Sun rays extend out behind her to highlight her radiance. In her hands, Lady Liberty holds a torch high in the air in one and an olive branch in the other.
The reverse of the 2001-W 1/10 oz Proof American Gold Eagle Coin bears the image of an eagle family, which was originally designed by famous artist Miley Busiek. In the image, a male eagle flies overhead carrying an olive branch. He approaches a nest, where a female eagle and her hatchlings sit. Certain specs of this coin are featured on the reverse as well, including its purity, weight, and value.
