The American Eagle Coin program was launched by the United States Mint back in 1986. During the first release of gold coins, the mint offered 1 and 1/2 oz gold weights. Today, you can purchase 1/4 oz and 1/10 oz weights, as well. The mint also releases these coins in three different finishes: bullion, uncirculated, and proof. There are also four different metal types, including silver, gold, platinum, and palladium, which each feature different obverse and reverse designs.
Lady Liberty strides forward in Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ Gold Double Eagle design, which was originally introduced in 1907 on the Gold Double Eagle coins of that time. In the image, Lady Liberty is walking away from the Capitol building in Washington D.C. with the sun hitting her back. In one hand, she holds a flaming torch. She carries an olive branch in the other hand.
On the reverse face of these coins, you will find sculptor Miley Busiek’s bald eagle family design. The image features a large male eagle returning to the family nest with an olive branch between his talons. His female mate and hatchling await him in the nest. This design was created just for use on these coins in 1986.
Each of these coins ship out from our secure facility in clear plastic flips that offer protection for the coins during shipping and storage. The coins each contain 91.67% 22-karat gold by weight, which ends up equaling 1/2 Troy oz of fine gold content. The rest of the coins’ composition includes other metals like silver and copper to make the coins stronger and more durable.
