The coin was the first of two major bullion coins from the Perth Mint to feature native wildlife, with the Australian Kookaburra the first silver bullion coin of its kind. In 1990, the Perth Mint both launched the new Silver Kookaburra Series and transformed its existing Gold Nugget Series into the Gold Kangaroo Series. Both coins feature native wildlife on the reverse side, with a new depiction of the respective creatures on the coins each year. This is a format that Perth Mint still follows to this day.
The kookaburra belongs to the kingfisher family (Alcedinidae) and is closely related to other kingfishers. It evolved in Australia, where it has become an iconic species. There are four species of kookaburra: the Laughing Kookaburra, Blue-winged Kookaburra, Spangled Kookaburra, and Rufous-bellied Kookaburra. The Laughing Kookaburra is the most well-known and widespread.
Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II is on the obverse of 2001 1 oz Silver Kookaburra Coins. This portrait of the Queen was created by Ian Rank-Broadley in 1998 and is the fourth-generation portrait of the Queen featured on British and Commonwealth coinage. The Queen is shown in right-profile relief with the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland Tiara.
Two kookaburras are featured on the reverse of 2001 Australian Silver Kookaburras. Created for the 2001 release, this design shows a mating pair together on the branch of a tree, perched back to back. Kookaburras are monogamous and form long-term pair bonds. Breeding pairs work together to defend their territory and raise their chicks.
These 2001 1 oz Australian Silver Kookaburra Coins are available to you with plastic capsules. The 2001 release had a mintage cap of 300,000 coins for the 1 oz Silver Kookaburra issue and only surpassed the 50% mark by a few thousand coins, finishing just over 169,000 coins in total sales.
