Despite a sluggish economy in the US at the turn of the 21st century and dramatic uncertainty at the end of 2001 following the attacks of 9/11, sales of American Gold Eagle coins were significantly down for this particular release year. The 2001 1 oz American Gold Eagle Coin is available to purchase today from JM Bullion.

The 2001 1 oz American Gold Eagle Coin had an extremely low mintage figure. In fact, today it remains the second-lowest in the program’s history following the mintage for 2007 American Gold Eagle coins. Part of the reason behind the dip in demand for the 1 oz coin is the variety of the program as a whole.
American Gold Eagle bullion coins are struck annually in a total of four weights, ranging from the 1 oz to the three fractional weights of ½ oz, ¼ oz, and 1/10 oz. The 1/10 oz coin has, since the turn of the 21st century, been the more popular coin in terms of demand and mintage in most years. In 2001, the 1/10 oz coin outsold the 2001 1 oz American Gold Eagle coin by more than 130,000 units.
On the obverse of the 2001 1 oz American Gold Eagle Coin is the image of Liberty by Augustus Saint-Gaudens. This design was in use on the $20 Gold Double Eagle from 1907 to 1933, and features Lady Liberty walking confidently, her hair and robe flowing in the breeze, toward a brighter future while providing a guiding light for the nation.
The reverse of the American Gold Eagle coin in this collection features the image of a family of nesting bald eagles. The female is depicted as a staunch guardian, keeping a close eye on a group of hatchlings in the nest. The male is shown flying over the nest with branches in its talons. Miley Busiek created this design in 1986 specifically for the American Gold Eagle.
Each 2001 1 oz American Gold Eagle Coin in this listing is in BU condition. Coins in this condition have no signs of wear and tear, however you may notice minor flaws ranging from breaks in the luster and spotted surfaces the contact marks from the production process at the mint.
