The collection started in 1986 with 1 oz gold and fractional gold coins, but in 1991, the mint added 2 oz, 10 oz, and 1 Kilo coins. However, the 2 oz and 10 oz coins were discontinued in 2009. The 2000 10 oz Gold Kangaroo features an iconic Perth Mint depiction of the red kangaroo that is inspired by a design that originated in the early 20th century on an Australian copper penny. The Australian penny, minted from 1911 to 1964, featured one of the most recognizable coin designs in numismatic history. George Kruger Gray was a renowned British coin and medal designer who created the iconic leaping kangaroo design that appeared on the reverse of Australian pennies from 1938 until its cancellation in 1964.
The obverse of the 2000 Australian Gold Kangaroo comes with a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. Her Majesty is shown here in right-profile relief wearing the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland Tiara. This design was created in 1998 by Ian Rank-Broadley and was used on Australian coins until 2018.

The red kangaroo (Osphranter rufus) is Australia’s largest marsupial and the world’s largest living marsupial, with adult males reaching heights of up to 6 feet and weights exceeding 200 pounds.
