The obverse of 2000 1 oz Lunar Dragon Privy Silver Maple Leaf Coins features the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II. The Queen is shown in right-profile relief with a necklace, earrings, and the George IV State Diadem Crown on her head. This image of the queen debuted in 1990 and was designed by Dora de Pedery-Hunt. She is also the first Canadian artist ever to create a monarch portrait for the Royal Canadian Mint.
2000 Lunar Dragon Privy Canadian Silver Maple Leaf Coins depict the maple leaf on the reverse. This image has been used since the series’ debut and was created by Walter Ott. This image has gone mostly unchanged since its initial appearance.
The Royal Canadian Mint first opened in Ottawa in 1908 where it was known as the Royal Mint. During The Great Depression, they negotiated to separate from the Royal Mint and become the Royal Canadian Mint in conjunction with the Canadian Government. Demand rose and by the 1980s a second location had to be opened in Winnipeg.
