Like the American Gold Eagle, the Gold Maple Leaf experienced a surge in demand in the late 1990s as the concerns over Y2K increased. However, as Y2K came and went in 2000, demand for gold and silver cooled markedly. The result in the Canadian Gold Maple Leaf Series was record-low demand for the coins.
Queen Elizabeth II is on the obverse of 2000 Canadian Gold Maple Leaf Coins. The depiction of the Queen shown here is the third-generation effigy for Canadian coins. Designed in 1990 by Dora de Pedery-Hunt, this version of the Queen’s effigy was the first created by a Canadian artist and was used through 2004 on the Gold Maple Leaf Series.
The sugar maple leaf is found in the reverse design of the 2000 1 oz Gold Maple Leaf. This design was created in 1979 by Walter Ott for the debut of the Canadian Gold Maple Leaf Series. It depicts a natural image of the sugar maple leaf, the official national emblem of Canada. The design remains in use today on the coins.
