20 Peso Cuba Gold Coins were introduced in Cuba in 1915. The island nation was under the control of the United States at this point, and the island government requested the assistance of the US Mint in producing gold coins for circulation. Denominations of 1, 2, 4, 5, 10, and 20 Peso gold coins were eventually introduced bearing designs from Charles E. Barber, the Chief Engraver of the United States Mint in 1915. The coins were issued in large numbers in 1915 and much smaller numbers in 1916 before production ceased.
Jose Marti, a poet, essayist, and leader of the movement to organize Cubans for independence is featured on the obverse side of 20 Peso Cuba Gold Coins. Mr. Barber’s design of Marti captures the journalist in right-profile relief with the date mark, purity, and weight of the coin in grams all inscribed on this side.
Cuba’s coat of arms is featured in the reverse design of 20 Peso Cuba Gold Coins. The national coat of arms consists of a shield in front of a Roman fasces. The fasces is topped by a Phrygian cap and there is a wreath of oak and laurel flanking the shield beneath and on its sides.
