There are two common 20 Francs Gold Coins available for purchase still today. The 20 Francs Swiss Helvetia and the 20 Francs Gold French Rooster Coin, each of which had similar minting runs during the late 19th and early 20th century. These coins feature 90% gold, with copper the common metal making up the remaining 10% of the alloy. This gold-copper combination makes for a more durable circulation coin.
The Swiss coin was struck in the city of Bern, Switzerland, at the Bern Mint. These coins were originally struck between 1897 and 1935, with one-year runs in 1947 and 1949. Those latter production years were restrikes of previously minted coins.
On the obverse of the Swiss coin is the image of a female figure widely regarded as the personification of Switzerland. The reverse features a rendition of a Swiss shield surrounded by oak leaves. The year of minting and value of the coin is engraved on this side.
The French coin is more popular than the Swiss coin, but was struck for a shorter period of time from 1899 to 1914. These 20 Franc Gold Coins feature the Gallic Rooster, which is known as an unofficial symbol of France, on the reverse. The obverse bears a bust of the national symbol of France, Marianne, which was designed by J.C. Chaplain. Each of the French coins were struck by the world-famous Paris Mint.
Each of the 20 Francs Gold Coins available in this product listing from JM Bullion is in Very Good or better condition.
