The Silver Shield Collection from the Golden State Mint tackles a variety of social and cultural issues, past and present, in beautiful silver round designs. Among the images depicted are those which present a different take on the vision of Liberty. For example, a previous release depicted Freedom Girl, which was a unique take on the Peace Silver Dollar design.
In this new Standing Freedom Silver Shield Round, we are presented with a bold and powerful image of Freedom. Known in this design as Lady Virtue, she exudes strength and determination with symbols of war at the ready to do what must be done. The Standing Freedom design is part of Golden State Mint's MiniMintage program, which combines beautiful designs with extremely low mintage figures to deliver highly-collectible silver products.
On the obverse of the 2 oz Standing Freedom Silver Shield Round is the depiction of the figure known as Lady Virtue. She cuts a bold figure in this design as she wears a robe that showcases a muscular frame ready to do battle in defense of freedom. She holds a spear in her right hand and guards herself with a shield in her left. The shield she carries features the Trivium of Grammar, Logic, and Rhetoric symbol upon it. Above her head is an engraving of “Freedom” that runs in a half circle above her flowing hair.
The reverse side of the Standing Freedom Silver Shield Round includes the improved design of the Silver Shield logo for the collection. This intricate design centers on a sword which stands on its blade tip and is wrapped in flames. The name of the collection, weight, purity, and metal content of the round are engraved around this design, along with the date of issue. A ring of flames encircles the entire design.
The Golden State Mint is a private minting facility in the United States with facilities in both Southern California and the state of Florida. Opened in 1974, the mint was founded by Jim Pavlakos, whose son Andrew joined the mint to help propel it into the future with the same brilliant designs.
