Few historical designs are as recognizable or as rich in meaning as the Aztec Sun Stone. Its inclusion on precious metals rounds has made it a consistent favorite among collectors who appreciate ancient cultures, symbolic design, and the history of Mesoamerica. Produced in silver, gold, or copper, these rounds offer a detailed rendering of the original stone carving. Each piece serves not only as a form of precious metals ownership, but also as a representation of one of the most influential civilizations of the ancient Americas. Today, 2 oz SilverTowne Aztec Calendar Silver Rounds are available at JM Bullion.
Round Highlights:
The precise function of the Aztec Sun Stone has been debated by scholars for generations, and the popular notion that it served as a working calendar, while understandable given its rich calendrical imagery, is now regarded by most experts as an oversimplification of a far more complex and sacred object. The most widely accepted interpretation today is that the Sun Stone was a ceremonial monument celebrating the Aztec cosmological worldview and, in particular, the fifth sun (the current world age in Aztec belief) along with the divine compact between humanity and the sun god Tonatiuh.
All 2 oz SilverTowne Aztec Calendar Silver Rounds available here come in protective flips. The 2 oz silver round is one of the largest options in the series and is available alongside four other silver round options, a copper round, and silver bars, all featuring the Aztec Calendar Stone as the primary design element.
The obverse of SilverTowne Aztec Calendar Silver Rounds highlights the intricate design of the Sun Stone. Originally carved from a massive slab of basalt, the artifact reflects both artistic and cosmological significance. At its center is Tonatiuh, the sun god, shown with a protruding tongue shaped like an obsidian blade used in ritual sacrifice. Encircling him are four panels symbolizing the previous eras of the world according to Aztec belief. These are followed by a ring displaying the twenty named days of the ritual calendar. Additional outer rings include decorative elements such as jade and turquoise symbols, celestial imagery, and radiating solar forms. The entire design is framed by two fire serpents that complete the outer edge.
On the reverse of the 2 oz Aztec Calendar Silver Rounds is a right-facing image of Emperor Cuauhtemoc. He became ruler of the Aztec Empire in 1520 and was the final tlatoani, as well as a relative of Moctezuma II. During the Spanish invasion led by Hernan Cortes, Cuauhtemoc led efforts to defend Tenochtitlan. Although his resistance was strong, it ultimately did not prevent the fall of the city. He was captured in August 1521 and later executed by the Spanish in 1525.
